Raices de la Violencia/Roots of Violence

Roots of Violence tells of the adventures of love and friendship experienced by a group of adolescents from Chenko, a city that is haphazardly and chaotically growing. Lucho, Laura, Wara, Paola and the rest of the group are entwined in situations marked by domestic violence, child abuse, blackmail, traditional machismo, and sexual assault.

In partnership with Diakonia, PCI Media Impact has been implementing Strong Women – Strong Voices in Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia since 2011. The program is led by national coalitions of partners in each of the three countries. Each national coalition has written, produced and broadcast 48 episodes of an Entertainment-Education (E-E) radio drama (seasons 1 and 2) supporting radio call-in shows and discussion guides designed to empower women, tackle cultural norms that promote violence against women and provide access to women-friendly services.

In 2015, PCI Media Impact and the Department of State are bringing the program to a national scale in Bolivia. The program extends its reach by leveraging already-produced materials but also producing and broadcasting a new 10-episode radio drama that will be specifically tailored to the Bolivian context. Two seasons of the original dramas (“T’ikarinaykipaq Warmi” from Cusco, Peru and “Raíces de Violencia” from El Alto, Bolivia) were also rebroadcast to increase community awareness and action on the issue of gender-based violence and its wider policy implications.

“I learned many things from this program; I learned that women should not be touched, that women should be respected, and if a woman do live through some kind of violence, she should not stay silent; she must file a report, no matter how painful, because it is more painful to live through abuses.”
-Listener, 17-year-old Female

“This radio drama … opened my senses to be able to speak in a different way, to find other ways, another way to avoid violent words with my wife, that’s what I learned”.
-Listener, Male
