La Caldera (Not For Sale)

La Caldera is a small border town where many different paths, realities, people, languages and colors have become intertwined as they experience tender, raw, and violent moments each and every day.

Among La Caldera’s residents is Canela, a lonely yet brave teenager who has many dreams for her life.  Simon is an innocent boy living in another neighborhood of La Caldera who comes from a wealthy family in the countryside.  He works as a household servant and prefers living a reclusive, rather anonymous life.  Another key resident of La Caldera is the mysterious Señor X who observes all happenings from the shadows.  Señor X has recently arrived in La Caldera after fleeing a dismal job he had for many years that prohibited him from seeing daylight while he worked.

Canela, Simon, and Señor X all have a tragic experience in common: they have been forced into one of the most horrific, large-scale human trafficking crime circles at different times in their lives. Will this young boy, teenager, and adult man succeed in escaping their abusers of the past and present?  Or will they continue living in a life or death situation?  Will they learn how to watch out for themselves?  Will Canela and Simon be able to leave the Hell they are currently in like Señor X managed to do years before?

La Caldera is a 21-episode radio drama that was designed, produced, and first aired in Bolivia in October 2012. Through relatable stories and plot lines, the drama centers on trafficking, and sexual “padrinazgo,” and commercial exploitation while serving as a platform for dialogue on these issues. Today, La Caldera is being broadcast on over 155 stations across Bolivia. The target audience is youth from lower-middle class families that are at risk of becoming victims of exploitation and trafficking, especially girls and women between the ages of 11 and 22 years.

The program Not for Sale raises much-needed awareness about human exploitation and trafficking in Bolivia’s most vulnerable areas by using Media Impact’s three-pronged My-Community approach to social change: a serial drama, a local radio talk show and a community mobilization campaign. Central to Not for Sale is a 21-episode Entertainment-Education serial drama, which focuses on the issue of trafficking in Bolivia. The drama will air in 25 locations – zones in which residents are most at risk of recruitment, trafficking and exploitation (La Paz, El Alto, Tipuani, Santa Cruz, Puerto Suarez, Montero, Guayaramerín, Cochabamba, Quillacollo, Yacuiba, Bermejo, Potosí,Tupiza, Villazón, Oruro, Colchani). Each 15-minute episode is followed by a radio magazine talk show that responds to the content of the drama and serves as a platform for dialogue based around the issues highlighted in the radio drama episodes. The drama serves as a platform for dialogue surrounding issues such as commercial sex and labor exploitation. Our target audience will be children, teenagers and youth from lower-middle class families that are victims of exploitation and trafficking.

In the village of Xiamas, the radio talk show program is supported by the local ombudsman. Christian Agramont, the host of the radio show, told us that when the eight episode of the radio drama aired, the public advocate spoke about a little girl that ran away from home and her parents’ desperate attempts to find her. During the program, they asked the public to come forward with any information on the girl’s whereabouts. A few minutes later, one of her friends called into the show and said that thanks to finding out about the dangers of human trafficking as part of the radio drama and her conversation with her parents, she and other friends advised the girl to return to her family and to talk to her parents. The following day, the girl went back to her home and was able to solve her family issues thanks to the involvement of the Obudsman. She even returned to school and her parents thanked their daughter’s friends for warning her of the dangers of running away.

Celebrating the production of La Caldera, Business Manager of the United States Embassy Larry L. Memmot hosted a lunch on June 20th, 2013 where he expressed his sincere thanks to Media Impact, our team in Bolivia, and the entire production team of well-renowned, creative, and hardworking individuals. We are now working on the next stage of our human trafficking program. After financing La Caldera, the Narcotics Affairs Section (NAS) and the US Embassy in Bolivia have approved a new grant that will allow Media Impact and partners to produce educational and promotional materials for schools and radio stations that will increase awareness and spur social activism surrounding the atrocities of commercial trafficking.

Also the Representative of the United Nations Office Against Drugs and Crimes, Antonino de Leo, commended PCI’s and all other involved organization’s work. “In light of all these challenges, I want to highlight the fact that the U.S government and PCI Media Impact have launched the production of the educational radio drama ‘La Caldera.’ Having seen work that intends to educate the public, especially boys, girls and youth, on the dangers of human trafficking of such high quality fills us with pride. It is remarkable that this radio drama was created out of Bolivian reality”.
