Internships

PCI-Media Impact awards a variety of competitive part-time and full-time unpaid internships to highly motivated high school, undergraduate and graduate students in our programs, development and fundraising departments during the fall, spring and summer terms. Interns must possess a strong interest in international affairs, good writing and research skills, and knowledge of the issues and countries where PCI-Media Impact works.

Development Department Opportunities

All interns in PCI-Media Impact’s Development Department receive the following training sessions:

  • Preparing pithy, cogent letters
  • Developing compelling proposals
  • Entertainment-Education and Social Marketing

OPENING - Social Media Internship Summer/Fall 2010

Description - PCI-Media Impact seeks enthusiastic, innovative thinkers to join our Development team in creative initiatives to expand our dynamic online social media platforms. This is an excellent way to build a portfolio of work at one of the premier social change communications organizations and gain in-depth knowledge of new media and social movement media.

Responsibilities include:

  • Update, promote and develop content for our social networking sites, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and more
  • Help integrate social media site content into our primary website, mediaimpact.org
  • Transition social media followers into loyal donor base
  • Identify new online funding mechanisms
  • Create new online outlets for PCI-Media Impact
  • Write and distribute public relations and marketing pieces (press releases, email list serve communications, etc.)
  • Regularly report to the Development Department leadership on results.

Qualifications: - The successful Social Media Intern has experience with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and all things Web 2.0. The candidate will engage directly in social media strategy and initiatives. An interest or background in social media communications, marketing, or fundraising is helpful.

Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish is a plus. In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Photoshop and PowerPoint) is essential. Knowledge of video editing is highly desirable.

The intern should commit to work part-time, at least 3 days per week. The length of the internship is not limited to the posted start and end date.

Development Writer Intern - OPENING SUMMER/FALL 2010

Description: PCI-Media Impact seeks dynamic and creative self-starters to join our Development team. This internship is an excellent way to experience the administration and operation of a major not-for-profit organization affiliated with the United Nations. Interns will also learn vital persuasive and business writing skills. Most importantly, the successful intern will directly assist in cultivating a broad base of financial support for a roster of innovative programs that are helping people improve their health and lift themselves out of poverty. Due to the intensive nature of this internship, candidates will build a portfolio of work and network with others interested in international development and fund raising.

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing letters of inquiry and assisting in preparing grant proposals
  • Developing and designing promotional materials for programs
  • Program and site needs assessment research
  • Institutional prospecting research
  • Assisting development staff with administrative tasks as needed

Training: All interns in PCI-Media Impact’s Development Department receive the following training sessions:

  • Preparing pithy, cogent letters
  • Developing compelling proposals
  • Raiser’s Edge basic training
  • Entertainment-Education and Social Marketing

In addition, PCI-Media Impact interns also have opportunities to: Participate in programs and advocate the issues we champion--such as sexual reproductive health, human rights and sustainable development

  • Attend seminars and conferences sponsored by the UN and related NGOs, and business workshops of interest; and
  • Attend PCI-Media Impact staff and Development Department meetings
  • Work with leading experts and professionals in the fields of media, health, environment, public relations and donor development.

Qualifications: The Developing Writing Internship is designed for and graduate students and recent graduates.

PCI-Media Impact asks the intern have a background in writing and an interest in international development, marketing, communications, and grant writing.

Fluency in English required and in Spanish is highly desired. In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is needed. Knowledge of Illustrator is a plus.

PCI-Media Impact asks interns to commit to work at least 3 days per week for a minimum of 3 months. Working remotely is an option sometimes.

Social Media and Communications Intern - OPENING SUMMER/FALL 2010

Description: PCI-Media Impact seeks an enthusiastic, innovative thinker to join our Development and Communications team in creative initiatives to expand our online social media platforms. This is an excellent way to build a portfolio of work at one of the premier social change communications organizations and gain in-depth knowledge of new media and social movement media.

Video Editor and Website Administration Intern - OPENING SUMMER/FALL 2010

Description: PCI-Media Impact seeks an enthusiastic, innovative thinker to join our Development and Communications team in creative initiatives to expand our website/online social media platforms. This is an excellent way to build a portfolio of work at one of the premier social change communications organizations and gain in-depth knowledge of new media and social movement media.

Responsibilities include:  

  • Update current website with new programs, press releases, social media content
  • Work with website designer on overhaul of website
  • Coordinate with the Social Media and Communications Intern
  • Edit backlog of video footage about our programs
  • Report to the Development and Communications Department leadership

PCI-Media Impact interns also have opportunities to:  

  • Participate in programs and advocate the issues we champion--such as sexual reproductive health, human rights and sustainable development
  • Attend seminars and conferences sponsored by the UN and related NGOs, and business workshops of interest; and
  • Work with leading experts and professionals in the fields of media, health, environment, public relations and donor development.

 Qualifications: The successful Website and Video Intern will have experience with designing/updating websites and editing videos. The candidate will engage directly in social media strategy and initiatives. An interest or background in social media communications, marketing, or fundraising is helpful.

Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish is a plus. In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Office, website software and video editing is essential.

The intern should commit to work part-time, at least 3 days per week. The length of the internship is not limited to the posted start and end date. Some work can be done from home.
